Sun Ra Vinyl Record Bop Free Jazz Reissue Waxtime Album Music Reissue Angels And Demons At Play

Angels And Demons At Play was compiled from two different sessions, recorded four years apart (1956 and 1960), that reflect Sun Ra's evolution from hard Chicago bop towards exotic styles that transcended easy categorization. The album was released in 1965 with a distinctive sleeve design by Sun Ra, featuring an identical illustration on both sides, and no sleeve notes. Besides the leader, there's overlapping personnel at the two sessions, yet the two LP sides were somewhat incongruous, demonstrating how much the Arkestra had evolved in four years.

Side A (tracks 1–4) consists of four performances from the marathon 1960 Chicago recording session that produced dozens of tracks released over the subsequent decade on a series of Saturn releases. Two idiosyncratic works, "Tiny Pyramids" and the title track (the latter featuring a flute solo by Marshall Allen), were composed by bassist Ronnie Boykins. "Between Two Worlds," a Sun Ra original, is a short, springy cha-cha. The colorfully abstract "Music From The World Tomorrow," featuring Sun Ra on Cosmic Tone Organ and Phil Cohran on "violin-uke," is the album's revelation — a short "sound experiment" rather than a composition, hinting more than any work on the collection Sunny's future direction.

The B-side of the album (tracks 5–8) goes back to the 1956 first Arkestra sessions, featuring Sunny's emerging "Hard Space Bop." The work is solid, and representative of the foundational years of the Sun Ra legacy. Three of the tracks had been released as singles by Saturn.

The respective sides document two early periods of Sun Ra's musical trajectory. But by the time the album was released in 1965, neither side accurately reflected what Sun Ra was offering fans on the concert stage or on new album releases, much less where his music would head as the decade continued to unfold. Compare Angels and Demons to the albums Strange Strings (recorded 1965) and Atlantis (recorded 1967-68), which sonically and stylistically are, as Sun Ra might say, "from another planet."

Gilles Peterson announces the launch of his new Arc Records imprint with a reissue of cult record “Musica Infinita” by Mexican drummer and composer Tino Contreras. A psychedelic, experimental jazz record, originally released in 1978, it marked a daring step forward by the Mexico City-based musician, and is now re-released for a chance to get the widespread dues it deserves. A limited private press, copies of the original are highly sought after, despite the drummer being much overlooked in both his home country as well as abroad, with a career that started in the 1950s, and which has seen him share stages with many of the greats – including Dave Brubeck, Cannonball Adderley and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.Explaining his connection to the record, Peterson says, "This was the first record I heard from that region which had that amazing psychedelic, cosmic jazz sound. It's somewhere between a David Axelrod record and a release on Saturn. I've always had it as one of my secret gems."The story behind Peterson re-releasing the record is serendipitous. Several years ago, he bought a copy before a gig in Japan, and it soon became one of his most cherished discoveries; he was awed by its otherworldly blend of jazz fusion and psychedelia. Years later, booked to play at a festival in Mexico, Peterson was introduced to Carlos Icaza, a record collector and musician, who also had a copy of the record – in fact, he has two – and to whom it was also an extremely special album. To Peterson’s delight, Icaza suggested they meet up with Contreras who, at 95, is still active and based in Mexico City. Soon enough, the three of them were sat down together and agreed upon a plan to re-issue “Musica Infinita”.
Nujabes, who passed away in a car accident in Feb 2010, mainly released vinyl singles. This ''Metaphorical Music'' was his first album in which he put much effort to complete. Up until now, it has been a beloved masterpiece and also a core of Nujabes and Hydeout Productions. It includes ''Letter From Yokosuka'' the first produced song by Uyama Hiroto, who had been working with Nujabes and his best friend. ''F.I.L.O'' was born from a golden collaboration with rapper Shing02 who was featured on the classic hip hop masterpiece ''Luv(sic).'' ''A Day By Atmosphere Supreme'' is a heart-warming instrumental tune recently covered by Emancipator on his tribute album ''Modal Soul Classics II.'' Nujabes’ remix version of ''Latitude'' features hip hop group Five Deez, from Cincinnati, who had been a professional and personal friend of Nujabes. ''Blessing It (Remix)'' features MC Substantial & Pase Rock who had established the foundations of Hydeout with Nujabes. ''Lady Brown'' features Cise Star. On ''Kumomi'' he put his childhood memories and beautiful sceneries from his memories into sounds. ''The Final View'' is a beautiful and fleeting track expressing the aesthetic sense that dwells in the Japanese spirit. Also, there are other classic tunes which can be said to have determined his presence felt into this historical masterpiece. The first chapter of imaginary scenery music from Nujabes' short, but heartwarming life and soul, is now released on Gatefold 2xLP black vinyl.
