ntroducing Guohan to the Darker Than Wax family. Originally a native of Ningbo, China, Guohan began shaping his sound in the emerging beat scene in southern China. Now based in Nottingham UK, the producer’s unique influences and effortless style have solidified with his DTW label debut - The City of the Sun and Moon. Already an up-and-comer, Guohan’s well received 2021 debut LP Lost Sound Book has been supported by the likes of Charlie Bones, Esa, Toshio Matsuura, and Ninja Tune. Aside from co-founding Nottingham-based label Running Circle Records, Guohan also co-runs Meridian Sounds, an imprint from southern China pushing subliminal sounds from his motherland.

The City of the Sun and Moon reflects the mountains and liminal spaces from Guohan’s dreams and memories, channeling a healing warmth inspired by people, cities, villages, and tales of his grandparents. Influenced by the musical vibrations in Nottingham, especially DiY and the late Pete Woosh, the 6-tracker brings the listener along on an up-tempo odyssey, while retaining Guohan’s signature hypnotic style. Incorporating hazy synths, percussive rhythms, and collected sound pieces, Guohan paints a vivid picture of his personal journey throughout the record.

For his new LP, John Carroll Kirby “wanted to do something more electronic than previous albums.” He invited Canadian artist Yu Su to join him on production duties for Dance Ancestral, an album which loosely follows the narrative of a day unfolding. As the day mirrors the course of a life, so the album reflects on patterns and routines – what Kirby calls “the innate steps we take in life. When I say dance, I don’t mean an actual dance, I mean a choreography where we’re repeating these things that people have repeated forever.” For inspiration, he looked to an array of ideas and philosophies, including paganism, Mayan religion, bacchanalia, pseudoscience and New Age philosophy. The opening track and first single “Dawn of New Day,” featuring ambient pioneer Laraaji, pictures the first hours of morning. “I imagine Laraaji waking up feeling blessed and inspired by the sun,” says Kirby. “The lyric is very simple – “Dawn of a new day / morning light, morning light” – but there’s not a lot of people who could sing that sincerely and not come across a little cringe. Laraaji is the man for the job and I was flattered and honored he was willing to be a part of it.”
Adelaide producer Oisima is back with a new EP on Osulande's Yoruba Soul label. 'Deeper Waters' sees Oisima exploring live jazz instrumentation through the EP. Features include Aus soul vocalists Abbey Howlett and Wallace plus LA's Jimetta Rose. The track Harlem, has Dialect and Cazealux O.S.L.O trading back to back verses about their love affair with New York's Harlem suburb. Soulful tones throughout, this is a really easy record to listen to and put a smile on your dial for summer!
