Sony Legacy Recordings X Get On Down Miles Davis 1980s Reissue Series

Remastered from the original analog tapes

The first live Miles Davis electric band release since the very dark and heavy “Dark Magus” (1977). This album is edited together from live concerts at Boston’s Kix Club. The 2xLP set from 1982 contains reimagined versions of songs from “The Man With the Horn” (1981), tunes from the pre-electric Gil Evans collaboration “Porgy and Bess” (1959), and a dedication to the Boston venue called “Kix”. While this is one of the first live Miles Davis performances in over half a decade it certainly did not show!!! This album features R&B legend Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Stern on guitar, Bill Evans on saxophone, Mino Cinelu on percussion, and electric band alumni Al Foster on drums. Produced and edited by long time Miles collaborator Teo Macero.

A deep groove runs central throughout Xinxin's self-titled debut record. The band is always in conversation, emphatically exploring the space around the pocket as the songs slowly bloom. In more ecstatic numbers like 'Star Spell' or the lightly-serrated lead single 'Trust,' the group still finds room to stretch out and tastefully flex. The dense, almost hidden complexity of the music is always in service to the emotional content of the music and lyrics and the light, fleet-footed mix highlights each player's articulate, nuanced voice in the conversation. Xinxin is a quartet comprised of Janize Ablaza (Guitar, Vocals), Stephen Reed (Drums), Carlos Elias (Bass) and Jonah Huang (Keys). The group began as Janize's solo beat and songwriting project, ignited by her dissatisfaction with performing other artists' material in academic and public settings. The band's collective artistry combined makes for a jazzy, 90s-R&B-indebted sound that captures the feelings of exploration, discovery, and freedom found in childhood. Xinxin is well-known in their stomping grounds and those who see them live usually become cult fans. Limited edition pressing of 250.
Until the emergence of Larry Young the Hammond B3 organ tradition was firmly rooted in Soul Jazz, but Young brought a new perspective to the instrument by placing it in an adventurous Post-Bop context. His 1965 masterpiece Unity featured a cast of modern jazz masters with Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Henderson on saxophone, and Elvin Jones on drums. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
Strut present the first definitive retrospective of an icon of 1970s and ‘80s soul, jazz and disco, Patrice Rushen, covering her peerless 6-year career with Elektra / Asylum from 1978 to 1984. Joining Elektra after three albums with jazz label Prestige, Patrice had shown prodigious talent at an early age and had first broken through after winning a competition to perform at the Monterrey Jazz Festival of 1972. By the time of the recordings on this collection, she had become a prolific and in-demand session musician and arranger on the West coast, appearing on over 80 recordings for other artists. She joined the Elektra / Asylum roster in 1978 as they launched a pop / jazz division alongside visionaries like Donald Byrd and Grover Washington, Jr. “The idea was to create music that was good for commercial radio / R&B,” Patrice explains. “We were all making sophisticated dance music, essentially.” ‘Remind Me’ features all of Patrice Rushen’s chart singles, 12” versions and popular sample sources on one album for the first time. Formats included a 3LP set fully remastered by The Carvery from the original tapes. Includes an exclusive new interview with Patrice Rushen and rare photos.
