MotorCity Wine Recordings Glenn Echo Daniel Mainecke Vinyl Record Acid Jazz Downtempo Psychedlic Dub Trip Hop

Step into the hazy musical minds of Glenn Echo and Daniel Meinecke on Partly Cloudy, their debut full-length on MotorCity Wine Recordings. Mr. Echo, repping the Sol Power family out of Washington, DC, reached back to his 90s downtempo, acid jazz, and golden era beat-making roots to create 11 psychedelic, breakbeat-and-space-echo-infused tracks that serve as the perfect dreamy backdrop for Mr. Meinecke’s commanding and virtuosic New Orleans gospel funk.

Mr. Meinecke, an accomplished jazz keyboardist based in New Orleans (by way of Detroit), composed a dense, trippy, soundscape using nearly all the tools in his arsenal: Hohner D6 Clavinet, Moog Sub 37, Moog DFAM, Moog Mother 32, Dave Smith Prophet '08, Nord C1 Combo Organ, and Nord Stage 2.

Woven together with Glenn Echo’s production, arranging, and engineering, the end result is a rich tapestry of heady sounds with one foot firmly planted in the now and the other harkening back to the days of early Nightmares on Wax, Thievery Corporation, AIR, Ninja Tune, and the Native Tongues sound. Housed in a beautiful LP package with artwork by the legendary Michal Rafaj, printed on reverse cardboard to display proudly at your turntable while you spin it on those partly cloudy days.

Nine-piece West Africa-via-Melbourne ensemble Ausecuma Beats and improvised collective Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, also known as Z*F*E*X, reveal a new collaborative EP out August 19 via Music in Exile.Call it a match made somewhere in musical heaven, the minds behind Ausecuma Beats, comprised of members from Senegal, Mali, Cuba and Guinea, found they melded easily with Z*F*E*X following weeks of recording and sharing material remotely together.Z*F*E*X themselves, an ensemble comprised of drummer Zeke ‘Ziggy’ Zeitgeist, keyboardist and producer Lewis Moody, bassist Matthew Hayes, and a rotating cast of guests, are prolific musicians themselves with weighty credentials spread across their base locations of Australia, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Thus, from a backyard shed in Dandenong North, Australia, some of West Africa’s finest would record simple percussive tracks, which then surfed the airwaves via studios in Melbourne, Berlin and London, to finally land back on listeners doorsteps as a forthcoming collaborative EP, Deep Heat/Tropical Storm.Starring two guest vocalists who are some of the most invigorating in their respective scenes - Latin America via Berlin star Gotopo, and Melbourne’s own Rara Zulu - the EP’s beginnings in percussive exploration are transformed into a must-have record of all bangers.Expect the duelling minds of two highly respected acts to reveal a combined EP of complex compositions that remain wholly accessible thanks to addictive harmonies and melodies. Emotionally thrilling, and easy to love, listen and dance to.
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Sly & Robbie's Master Of Ceremony Dub. Master rhythm duo Sly and Robbie first met on the Jamaican club scene of the early 1970s, when both were playing clubs on Kingston's Red Hills Road. They began working together at Channel One studio when Sly was drummer and arranger of The Revolutionaries and Robbie the bassist mainstay of Bunny Lee's Aggrovators and soon became the most in-demand drum and bass team on the island. This obscure dub album, originally released on the Imperial label in Canada, was produced by Lee in the late 1970s, and has the Rhythm Twins trying their hands at updating classic rhythms such as "The Liquidator," "Death In The Arena," "It's Raining," "Love Me Forever" and "My Conversation," as well as killer cuts of Johnnie Clarke's "Roots Natty Congo," Gregory Isaacs' "Storm" and an odd "Legalize It" rendition, plus some wacky between-song interjections. A must for all dub devotees.
Twice Grammy nominated, Melbourne-based group Hiatus Kaiyote returns to announce their new album Mood Valiant, out June 25th via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune. Comprised of Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums), the new album is the follow up to their 2015 album Choose Your Weapon, which Rolling Stone described as "a stunning step up". The new project comes after being sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, and Drake—with whom Nai Palm collaborated on his Scorpion album. The announcement of Mood Valiant also comes alongside the first single "Get Sun (feat. Arthur Verocai)" The new album has been in the making for six years, but that interval reflects more hustle than hiatus. The result is an album that relaxes into a groove: sunlit, sublime, masterful. Behind everything is Hiatus’ familiar sense of musical adventure, their knack for making the complex sound simple. The six year journey of the album originally began on the road, as they began to add new material to their live sets in while touring in support of Choose Your Weapon. By the fall of 2018, backing tracks had largely been laid, ready for Nai’s vocals. Then, during a brief swing through the U.S., Hiatus’s frontwoman was diagnosed with breast cancer. “That was a massive scare,” recalls Nai. Her mother’s death from the same disease was never far from her mind. Nai rushed back to Australia and into the hospital, where she underwent a life-saving mastectomy. As Nai recovered, the band turned back to their work with altered perspectives. Her lyrics, even those written before her illness, took on a prescient quality. It wasn't until a trip to Rio de Janeiro in late-2019 to work with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai on "Get Sun" that the vibe of the entire album shifted.
