Quasar (q-way-zar) noun/astronomy: a massive and extremely remote celestial object, emitting exceptionally large amounts of energy, and typically having a starlike image in a telescope.

Castlemaine based beat maker and producer Ronny Quasar (aka Matt Rolfe) presents his second full length album Tropicality out now on bandcamp and on limited edition cassette.
Tropicality draws on the mutations of equatorial music from around the globe, mixing break beats, psychedelia, wah, funk and percussion. Synthesisers swell like spinnakers in a long Caribbean sunset. Dusty drum chops and field recordings are held together by electromagnetic forces. This music is for peninsula hotels verging the jungle wilderness, where the DJ spins gold in a nightclub known as The Panther Machine. These beats are for the shark-hat seeker of tropical wonder in a vista filled with speedboats, exotic birds, rum and reefer over turquoise waters.

The second single Catamaran evokes both the discoteque and the yacht club overseen by the glittering mysteries of deep space.

Set amongst the reggae scene of late 70s Jamaica, the film Rockers achieved instant cult status among music and cinema fans. Rockers' director, Ted Bafaloukos has received many accolades for his work on the film, but the fact that he was also a fine writer and undercover photographer is often overlooked. In 2005, just before his death, Bafaloukos penned this vivid and never-before-published autobiography.Beyond Bafaloukos' fascinating story of the "making-of" Rockers, it tells the tale of a Greek immigrant from a family of sailors and his move to New York, eventually rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Velvet Underground, Robert Frank, Jessica Lange and Philippe "Man on Wire" Petit. But there's a twist to this 1970s' New York story: Bafaloukos fell in love with reggae when it was still just an underground facet of Jamaican culture in the City. His experiences in New York eventually led him to shoot Rockers, praised for the portrait it paints of Kingston's late 70s music scene along with its unique style, mentality and fashion. The director's intense experiences in Jamaica and New York between '75 - '78 provide the substance of the scorching stories within, including; gunshots at his first ever reggae concert in Brooklyn, the director's bizarre arrest for suspicion of being a CIA operative, paranoia at the Bob Marley compound, musicians-turned actors' "rude boy" antics, and naturally, sympathetic, highly descriptive recollections of the music that first drew Bafaloukos into Jamaica's music and culture. An invaluable collection of photographs taken during the conception, writing and production of the film captures the zeitgeist and breathes life into the book. Production stills and photos taken during the era by Bafaloukos form the visual, cinematic backbone of the tome, faithfully rendering the amazing people, styles, and locations in living, breathing color. Taken all together, the text and images within Rockers will uncover new facets of this all-important era in Reggae music for even the most seasoned reggae aficionados. Beyond reggae circles, this new anthology offers an unparalleled snapshot of a highly fantasized and sought after je-ne sais-quoi the all-time Jamaican cool.

Bedroom Beats & B-sides is the first comprehensive history of the instrumental hip-hop and electronic scenes and a truly global look at a thirty-year period of modern music culture based on a decade of research and travel across Europe, North America, and Japan.Journalist Laurent Fintoni details the rise of a new generation of bedroom producers at the turn of the century through the stories of various instrumental hip-hop and electronic music scenes. From trip-hop, downtempo, and IDM to leftfield hip-hop, glitch, and beats, the book explores how these scenes acted as incubators for new ideas about composition and performance that are now taken for granted. Combining social, cultural, and musical history with extensive research and over 100 interviews, the book tells the B-side stories of hip-hop and electronic music from the 1990s to the 2010s. Using the format of a beat tape, it explores the evolution of a modern beat culture from local scenes to global community via the diverse groups of idealists on the fringes who made it happen and the external forces that shaped their efforts.
Straight No Chaser - #SNC99 arrives on at out HQ on Monday 16th July and we will start mailing out that week! So, you can pre-order now!! It’s took a little bit longer than we expected but hey, good things comes to those who wait.. Significantly, it was in the summer of 1988 – three decades ago – that we launched Straight No Chaser – the magazine of World Jazz Jive. Back then we defined the venture as a “designer fanzine” and in many respects that definition still holds true. The magazine evolved as a hub for a global community of music devotees committed to exploring diverse cultures of the African diaspora. From Sun Ra to Jeff Mills we explored ‘Intergalactic Sounds: Ancient To Future’ but in 2007, with the arrival of the internet, we were forced to call it a day. However, 10 years down the line, a fresh, bold jazz influenced, nu-generation have emerged and it felt right to pick up where we left off with #SNC98. Over 130+ pages, this issue – #SNC99 – connects with band-leaders Cassie Kinoshi (SEED Ensemble), Tenderlonious (22a), Femi Koleoso (Ezra Collective) and keys whiz Joe Armon-Jones. . Also in the mix are a host of spirited individuals like Midori Takada, Nabihah Iqbal, Nat Birchall and Ben LeMar Gay. The London- Lagos-Accra connection is explored alongside Durban’s Qgom scene. On the indie imprint tip there’s Gondwana, Jazz re:freshed, Detroit Love and On the Corner. For the crate diggers there’s Motown’s Black Forum + nuff reviews. #SNC98 sold out in under three weeks and though we’ve printed more mags there’s no room for complacency when it comes to getting your copy. This thing is worldwide!
