Phil Ranelin's first record as a leader differs from his later, 1976 offering, 'Vibes From the Tribe'. 'The Time Is Now' is full of the spirit, determination, and innovation inspired by John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp. Recorded in 1973 and 1974 (and released at the end of 1974), the set shows Ranelin to be an imposing composer and adept trombonist. The original album contained six compositions that are a deep musical brew of avant-garde improvisation, hard bop jazz esthetics, and soulful melodic ideas that were superimposed as a jump off point for both harmonic and rhythmic invention - the sound of Detroit! Lacquered directly from his master tapes in an all analog transfer by Bernie Grundman.Included in an extensive, oversized booklet, Larry Gabriel and Jeff “Chairman” Mao take us through the history of the Tribe, in a compelling story that delves not just into the history of the label and its principals, but into the story of Black American empowerment in the latter half of the 20th Century. The booklet features never-before-seen archival photos and rare ephemera from Tribe’s mid-1970s heyday.
David Versace is an Australian multi-genre keyboardist, composer and producer based in Meanjin, Queensland. Growing up in a very musical household it was always important to express and embrace all types of music and sonics. His sound ranges from Jazz and Samba to ambient works and the odd dance-floor heater. David also plays in Meanjin nu-jazz dance outfit First Beige.Since late 2019, he has self released around 20 different tracks and with the most recent signing to La Sape Records David is excited to announce his debut solo album 'Okra' a conceptual body of work that flows through a culmination of raw organic concepts conceived In The Moment, and his most elegant & articulated work yet.
Lonnie Liston Smith’s last album for the Flying Dutchman label ‘Renaissance’ was actually released on RCA in 1976. It is a bridge between his jazzier Flying Dutchman recordings and his slightly more commercial Columbia albums that followed: Exotic Mysteries, Loveland, Song for the Children and Bridge Through Time. His only outing on RCA, the music is an intoxicating mix of vintage Lonnie Liston Smith Jazz-Funk with his prototypical arrangements, flirtations with spiritual and Latin Jazz and beautiful instrumentation.‘Space Lady’ and the slightly slower ‘Mongotee’ are vintage Lonnie Liston instrumental Jazz- Funk grooves, hinging off a low-slung interplay between bass guitar and corruscating electric keys. ‘Mardi Gras (Carnival) ‘ has a Brazilian flavour and a relentless groove, a percussive and upbeat Jazz- Dance classic featuring a sensously plucked acoustic guitar and soulful acoustic piano, while the elongated rattle of vibraslaps and the knock of wood on metal in the shape of various agogo and cowbells ride away in the background.‘Renaissance’ is a beautiful mid tempo groove featuring brother Donald Smith on vocals, possesing a kick to the rhythm making that made it a popular feature on the 2-Step Rare Groove scene. ‘A Song of Love’ is an uplifting duet between Lonnie and his brother, which makes for some fantastic listening. Donald further puts his vocals to good use on the downtempo ‘Starlight and You’, one of the more spiritual cuts on the album replete with a gorgeous string section, glowing electric keys and ethereal harmonies.Renaissance is a great set from Lonnie, at a period in his career where his music turned a corner from his earlier spiritual outings —influenced by the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri and Oliver Nelson— to the more polished and commercial output of his columbia outing. Renaissance is a quiet-fire, a transitional record for Lonnie which retains the best characteristics of his earlier Flying Dutchman output as well as those from his later Columbia works: a perfect meeting point between the two. This is the first ever Lp reissue so grab it while you can. I’m taking one too…
On-Ly is the solo and collaborative moniker of pianist and producer Joshua Smeltink. On-Ly has been playing local traps since 2017, varying across numerous bands, recently settling into the second line-up for his own On-Ly band: Carl Lindeberg, bass (Surprise Chef), Henry Hicks, guitar (Horatio Luna) and Bryce Zelno, drums (Astral Flex). Spanning genres, On-Ly’s house and hip-hop history is ever-present, recently imbued with the hard-hitting post-bop jazz-rock of the 60’s and the 70’s, harking back to bands such as Weather Report and Miles Davis Group (70s); now, keeping the finger pressed to the pulse, his music finds a visceral edge set to the 2010’s and the century that precipitated it. Jazz-beats find synergy with neo-classical sampling, concepts of modern history, obscuring harmonies, machine-based improvisation and the exploration of transferring tangible messages to musical constructs.
