Epitomising the very best of their hometown’s unparalleled musical heritage, Dames Brown are no strangers to the extended Defected family following the recent release of slick, funk-filled record ‘What Would You Do?’As well as joining the Glitterbox crew in 2018 and appearing at Defected Croatia 2019, the Detroit trio continuously impress with their exquisite production, striking lyricism and a hefty dose of house authenticity. Now Athena Johnson, Teresa Marbury and LaRae Starr step out to properly introduce themselves to the wax lovers. Releasing their new record ‘Introducing Dames Brown’ on 7”, plus an instrumental, Detroit’s finest deliver a taste of what’s to come on their forthcoming album, capturing funk, house and soul from across the spectrum.
During the 1970s, innovative musicians redefined the sound of Jazz, Funk, and Soul music, digging deeper than ever before to unearth powerful new sonic textures. One such pioneer was keyboardist Weldon Irvine, a Jazz-Funk luminary who released some of the most revered recordings of the era. Irvine’s 1975 album “Spirit Man” is a true masterpiece, full of infectious grooves and otherworldly electronic elements. Entirely composed, arranged, conducted, and produced by Irvine himself, the album remains a potent artistic statement, both deeply spiritual and intensely funky. Crate diggers may recognize the opening track “We Gettin’ Down”, which was sampled by A Tribe Called Quest for their classic single “Award Tour”. Now, “Spirit Man” is back in print on limited-edition vinyl, complete with updated artwork. Order this official deluxe reissue now.
NBN (Nothing But Net) Records are very proud to present ‘In The Beginning’, first solo LP from South-Carolinian singer, composer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Teddy Bryant.Following dynamic musical years playing local shows with his Contemporary Jazz band Urbyne (since 1998), and releasing a Neo Soul album in 2012 as Moonlight Ora, Bryant now presents his first solo album. The son of a Jazz musician, Bryant began learning the piano from an early age, his natural talent for melodic and harmonic compositions didn't go unnoticed for long. With this entirely self-produced album Teddy invites listeners to a trip around his world, at the crossroads of Contemporary Soul, Street Soul, Neo Soul and R&B, with the intention of creating a “dreamy concept of sonic realness, an ode to everlasting love, paying tribute to Sade, Marvin Gaye, Prince and Quincy Jones”.
